“Filled with unexpected turns…streamlined, simple and elegant.”--Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

“Irrepressible, mischievous storytelling…encounters that unfold with almost folk-mythology whimsy.”--Jessica Kiang, Variety

In his fourth under-the-radar production since he was sentenced to house arrest and a twenty-year ban on filmmaking by the Iranian regime, Jafar Panahi (TAXI, THIS IS NOT A FILM) disguises sly commentary on life, love, and exile as a humorous shaggy dog story. City slickers Panahi (as himself) and actress Jafari (as herself) take off on a hurried mission to the countryside in order to track down a suicidal drama student whose family opposes her career. Along the steep and picturesque mountain roads, encounters with folksy raconteurs abound, from a grandmother who has elected to camp out in her grave to a farmer with a hilarious earthy tale of a champion bull’s studly exploits. Under the cover of road-movie humor, Panahi eases into a poignant tribute to those who have been forced to hide their light in politically harsh times. Winner of Best Screenplay at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. In Persian with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
