“A masterpiece by one of the most inventive and recondite directors ever to work in Hollywood.” - Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

“Proof that there is artistry and glory in a genre that never had to apologise for itself, not when it was this confident, beautiful, and good.” - Tim Brayton, Antagony & Ecstasy

Affluent, lonely widow Cary Scott (Jane Wyman) fills her days with trips to the country club, keeping up with her similarly wealthy friends, and looking forward to infrequent visits home by her college-aged children. She soon begins a passionate affair with her arborist, Ron Kirby (Rock Hudson), who introduces her to the idea of finding happiness not in material possessions, but in meaningful relationships and a simple life. When Ron proposes, Cary accepts, but is dismayed to find her children and friends meet the news with judgement and disapproval. Set in suburban New England, Douglas Sirk’s classic is a sumptuous exploration of the May-December romance. (RF)
