Nina Simone was unique. She defied labels--musical, sexual, political--and fearlessly demanded respect, whether from segregationists, record companies, or noisy audience members. Extensively researched and drawing the inside story from over 50 interviews with Nina’s family, friends, band members, lovers, and fellow activists, THE AMAZING NINA SIMONE is the first film to do justice to her uncategorizable art and complex personality. This in-depth documentary portrait follows the journey of her life and music through its many permutations, including childhood in a segregated small town, youth as a classical piano prodigy, redefinition as an Atlantic City bar singer, rise to stardom in the late 1950s (“I Loves You, Porgy”), emergence as a fiery activist (“Mississippi Goddam”), complicated bisexual love-life, struggle with bipolar disorder, self-exile to Liberia and France, and late-life comeback before her 2003 death.
