"One of the summer's freshest, most entertaining films." - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"Fascinating, funny, and, in the end, deep." - Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post

Cheeky, dazzling, and ultimately sobering, this audacious first fictional feature by documentary filmmaker Layton (THE IMPOSTER) is based on the 2004 "Transy Book Heist." Four bored college kids aspire to make themselves special by pilfering a trove of rare books - including a priceless copy of Audubon's "Birds of America" - from the library of Transylvania University in Lexington, KY, cribbing their clumsy modus operandi from Google searches and classic heist films like THE KILLING and RESERVOIR DOGS. Director Layton intersperses the narrative with present-day interviews with the real-life participants as they reflect upon their actions, interact with their fictional selves, and offer conflicting versions of what really happened. The result is a provocatively double-edged experience that suspends us between fact and fiction; heist film and anti-heist film; exhilaration and regret. DCP digital widescreen. (MR)
