"One of the year's best LGBT romances...A MOMENT IN THE REEDS might be tender and insightful, but it's also sexy as hell." - Alistair Ryder, Gay Essential
This sensitive romance has been billed as the first gay love story to be made in Finland. Mikko Makela's first feature has some coincidental similarities to the acclaimed British film GOD'S OWN COUNTRY, but it has its own distinctively lyrical flavor. Leevi, a literature student studying in Paris, returns to Finland after his mother's death to help his father fix up their lakeside cabin. Hired to assist them is Tareek, a recent Syrian refugee working as a manual laborer despite his training as an architect. When Dad goes away on business, Leevi and Tareek commence a romance that moves from tentative to passionate to serious, despite the constraint of having to communicate in a language - English - alien to both of them. The return of Leevi's conservative father brings with it the twin demons of homophobia and xenophobia, straining the lovers' relationship to the breaking point. In Finnish and English with English subtitles. Courtesy of The Film Collaborative. DCP digital. (MR)
