"A charming, modern, pre-Brexit rom-com…lovely, fresh, and funny." - Alexa Dalby, Britflicks
Like a JULES AND JIM for the 21st century, this radical reworking of rom-com formulas challenges conventional notions of gender, marriage, and family. Dance teacher Eva (Chaplin) and barge restorer Kat (Tena) are a lesbian couple living on a canal boat along London's Regent's Canal. Well into her thirties, Oona feels the call of motherhood, but the more bohemian Kat sees this as a threat to her unanchored lifestyle. Along comes Kat's Spanish friend Roger (David Verdaguer), hetero and horny, who is more than willing to break the impasse with a sperm donation. The three maintain a volatile ménage amid the cramped quarters and thin walls of the boat, until a catastrophic event threatens to split them apart forever. Director Marques-Marcet (10,000 KM) makes superb use of the secluded, shady backwaters of Regent's Canal, and Geraldine Chaplin has a juicy cameo as Kat's dotty but perceptive mom.
