"A brilliantly inventive escape from the dead end of British social realism."
—Jonathan Romney, Sight & Sound

"A remarkable film: conceptually acute, brilliantly realised, impossibly sad."
—Sukhdey Sandhu, The Telegraph

In the recent Sight & Sound critics' poll naming the Best Films of 2010, THE ARBOR came in at #5 (between CARLOS and WINTER'S BONE). The film is based on the true story of the extraordinarily talented Andrea Dunbar, who grew up in a bleak Yorkshire housing estate known as "The Arbor," wrote a successful play (The Arbor) at age 15, and followed it with another success, Rita, Sue and Bob Too. Ravaged by drugs and alcohol, she died at age 29, leaving behind two embittered daughters who share the focus of the film. What has excited critics is director Barnard's innovative and highly effective mixture of fictional, documentary, and theatrical techniques, which include actors lip-synching recordings of the original participants, and restaging excerpts from The Arbor on a green in the middle of Dunbar's old neighborhood. In English. Special advance screening courtesy of Strand Releasing. DigiBeta video. (MR)
