“Knockout feature debut…the filmmaker’s desire to see what makes people tick reveals a big heart, and in AVA, it never stops beating,” — Stephen Salto, The Moveable Feast
“Exquisite, unorthodox framings and reframings…each one posing a different inquiry.” — Jonathan Rosenbaum
A uniquely framed story of a rebellion-fraught coming of age, AVA brings freshness of vision to the raw emotion inherent in a young girl’s bitter recognition of her parents’ double standards, and the hypocrisy that permeates every aspect of her strict girls-only education, with its overt focus on female chastity. Director Foroughi has a talent for portraying girlhood in both its giggly and sullen aspects, as Ava (Jabbari) and her friends gossip about boys and crushes, pass notes and dream, but precocious Ava makes a bet involving a wished-for date that can’t be fulfilled without bringing the fragile artifice of her family’s moral universe crashing down around her. In Persian with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
