This exciting adventure-thriller tells the incredible true story (previously the source of the 1982 Disney production NIGHT CROSSING) of two East German families that plot to escape the GDR by secretly building a hot-air balloon. The story begins in 1978 with their first attempt, which crash-lands just short of the Bavarian border. They manage to flee the scene undetected, but only after leaving crucial evidence behind. After an unsuccessful attempt to contact the U.S. embassy in East Berlin, they set about building another balloon, struggling to keep their work undetected as the Stasi closes in. Director-cowriter Herbig's access to Stasi files enables him to beef up the other side of the manhunt, with Thomas Kretschmann (THE PIANIST, DOWNFALL) outstanding as the formidable chief investigator whose methodical detective work becomes as absorbing as the fugitives' painstaking efforts to fly their way to freedom.
