"A wonderfully absurd crime comedy with a wicked streak." – Charlie Schmidlin, The Playlist

"This quick-witted comedic update on Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn would make Mark Twain proud." – Ananda Dillon, Way Too Indie

A potentially strained concept is brought off with easygoing élan in this clever and affectionate transposing of Mark Twain’s timeless characters to a modern-day setting. Boys turned young men, Huck Finn is now a world-weary ex-convict and Tom Sawyer an unlikely policeman. Still an inveterate dreamer-schemer, the motor-mouthed Tom gets the old gang together in a dubious and highly illegal plan to locate the long-lost, legendary Murrell’s Treasure. Also on the trail is their old nemesis Injun Joe, played with sardonic Chigurh-like menace by Stephen Lang (AVATAR); the way the filmmakers finesse the potential racism of the character is worth the price of admission alone. BAND OF ROBBERS respects Twain without sentimentalizing him--the film’s high-spirited sense of adventure is deepened by a Peckinpahesque undertone of melancholy and lurking violence.
