"Just try watching it without smiling." — Neil Genzlinger, The New York Times

"What makes EIGHT DAYS A WEEK such a blast is the focus on live performance, including TV broadcasts and touring footage many of us have never seen before... Howard puts us back at the center of the noise, and the sheer intensity of the release is stunning all over again." — Ty Burr, Boston Globe

The feel-good movie of the year, Ron Howard's euphoric but far from shallow documentary recaptures the phenomenon known as Beatlemania from the inside. Rather than attempting to cover the whole story of the Beatles, the film concentrates on the years 1963-1966, when the Fab Four were almost constantly (in part, because of a disadvantageous record contract) performing live on tour. Howard reenergizes the tale with rare and previously unseen footage (some culled from fans' caches); superbly paced editing; attention to the band's extraordinary camaraderie under pressure; fresh, intimate interviews with surviving members Paul and Ringo; and judiciously selected talking heads, including insiders Richard Lester and Larry Kane, musicians Elvis Costello and Jon Savage, and African American fans Whoopi Goldberg and Dr. Kitty Oliver (who testify movingly to the group's often-overlooked impact on segregation). Most of all, the film highlights the music, using cleaned-up sound and restored footage to present electrifying, uninterrupted performances of Beatles classics that confirm the group's brilliance as a live band.

The 107-minute documentary is followed by, as a theatrical exclusive not available in cable and home video versions, THE BEATLES LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM, a beautifully restored 30-minute film of the legendary 1965 concert. DCP digital. (MR)
