“Sardonic, cruel, funny, macabre, yet surprisingly good-hearted…you’d be hard-pressed to find anything as original or poignant.” — Dennis Harvey, Variety

"The darkest and most daring hand-drawn animated movie of the year. It alternates between the horrific and the comical, and its imagery assaults the viewer like a nightmarish Goya painting." — Bill Desowitz, Indiewire

An anthropomorphic bird-child is the hunted innocent and ritual scapegoat in a soaring, adult-oriented animated allegory based on the graphic novel by co-director Vázquez. Leavened with strains of macabre humor, this darkly surreal tale journeys into a post-apocalyptic island world populated by bedeviled cartoon animals whose feral ethos, venal capers, and quests fueled by “happy pills” give the lie to their eerily adorable cuteness. Dinky, a winsome adolescent mouse in search of a way off the island, ditches her holy-roller mother and sinister stepfather for the company of ragtag outcasts including a timid bullied fox and a bipolar rabbit possessed by demons, only to run afoul of menacing junkyard rats and other deadly foes who have Birdboy in their sights. Winner of Best Animated Feature in Spain’s Oscar-equivalent Goya Awards. Note: Adult content. In Spanish with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
