After World War II, some 4,000 Jews chose to remain in Germany, for reasons not always easy to explain to themselves or their families. Adapted from the fact-based novel "The Traveling Salesmen" by co-scripter Michel Bergmann, this bittersweet con-artist dramedy boldly mixes tones to tell the story of one of those who remained. Dapper, devious David Bermann (Bleibtreu), whose family was wiped out in the Holocaust, enlists a team of fellow survivors in a PAPER MOON-like scheme to sell linens to guilt-ridden Germans. "We're the Jewish revenge," David unapologetically tells his confederates. Meanwhile, he is being investigated by the American Army for suspected collaboration with the Nazis. He tells a skeptical female officer (Traue) how his joke-telling prowess impressed the concentration camp commandant so much that he was enlisted to teach to the humor-impaired Hitler how to be funny! An unlikely tale, but what if it were true? In German, English, and Yiddish with English subtitles. Courtesy of Film Movement. DCP digital. (MR)
