"The most entertaining film I've seen at this year's Berlinale...funny, engaging, and, here and there, wrenching." - David Hudson, Fandor

"One the year's most unexpected films." - Michael Sicinski, Letterboxd

This ingenious tour de farce by actor (TONI ERDMANN) / director (EVERYDAY OBJECTS) / critic ("Revolver") Wackerbarth centers on the production of a made-for-TV remake of R.W. Fassbinder's 1972 masterpiece THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT. Wackerbarth draws additional inspiration from BEWARE OF A HOLY WHORE, RWF's classic black comedy of an imploding film production, so that the power dynamics Fassbinder saw at the root of all love relationships merge with the power dynamics of a movie set. The PETRA remake's director Vera (Engel) has already taken the dubious step of heterosexualizing Fassbinder's all-lesbian original ("It's about love, not lesbian love," she claims), and things get worse when she is unable to cast the lead role. Actress after actress is auditioned, only to be summarily dismissed, while the crew grumbles, the producers grow more frantic, and an obscure actor (Lust) used as a stand-in sees a chance to profit from the confusion.
