One of the most ambitious Lithuanian productions of recent years, THE EXCURSIONIST is an inspiring true story taken from a dark period in the nation’s history. In the 1950s, under the yoke of Stalinism, hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians were deported to gulags in the Soviet Union. Marija, an orphaned eleven-year-old girl, escapes from a transport train and sets out on a 6,000-mile trek back home, posing as a Russian and keeping her true identity secret in the face of suspicion and cruelty.

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis was a crucial figure in the evolution of modern Lithuanian culture. Equally gifted as a composer and painter (“I paint music,” he declared), he created hundreds of visionary works in both media before his death in 1911 at age 35. He also fought for the integrity of Lithuanian language and culture in the face of Russian and Polish domination.

Ruta’s friends and family warn her that this is a Stasi trap, but she is relentlessly drawn by a desire to reunite with the father she barely knew.

In this haunting tale of mortality and memory, a sailor prepares for his last voyage, but it is not one that he will take by ship. Audrius, a veteran of the merchant marine, knows that he is dying. He disembarks at the port city of Klaipeda and sets out to pay a final visit to the people who have been important in his life: lovers, friends, enemies, relatives, and his divorced wife and their son. Audrius is a complex, fascinating character, and the rich color cinematography beautifully captures the ambience of the docks and the countryside.
