The stormy but enduring bond between two giants of French culture is the focus of this graceful dual-biopic of Paul Cézanne (Gallienne of YVES SAINT LAURENT) and Émile Zola (Canet of TELL NO ONE), whose friendship began in childhood in the sun-drenched hills of Aix-en-Provence but fluctuated wildly as they pursued different paths toward artistic glory. The film begins in 1888, with an outraged Cézanne confronting Zola about the thinly veiled portrait of him as a failed genius in the novel "The Masterpiece." Flashbacks fill in their complex relationship, with emphasis on the contrasting personalities of the temperamental outsider Cézanne and the reserved burgher Zola. Director Thompson (JET LAG, AVENUE MONTAIGNE) recounts this lifelong love-hate affair with rich period detail and psychological insight, taking a cue from Zola’s insistence that "The Masterpiece" was as much a portrait of himself, with his secret fears and repressed longings, as it was of Cézanne.
