“From the moment a child picks up an instrument, she is no longer poor,” said conductor José Antonio Abreu, creator of the El Sistema music education program that began in his native Venezuela 40 years ago and has since transformed the lives of disadvantaged children around the globe. CRESCENDO! follows two El Sistema-inspired programs, one in West Philadelphia, the other in Harlem, focusing on three vividly drawn children: extroverted 11-year-old violinist Raven, quiet 13-year-old viola player Zebadiah, and academically challenged 11-year-old trombone prodigy Mohammed. The rewards are considerable (and by no means limited to musical accomplishment), but the problems are real and not necessarily surmountable, as the young musicians face ego clashes, discipline problems, parental misgivings, and inadequate grades.
