"Magnificent, moving… it reduces almost everything else you're likely to see this season to the size of a small cinder." - Vincent Canby, The New York Times
Nominated for five Academy Awards (and winner for Best Cinematography), CRIES & WHISPERS was both a critical and commercial hit whose mainstream box-office success (it was distributed by Roger Corman's New World Pictures) marked the height of art-cinema's glory days. One of Bergman's most emotionally intense films, it examines the relationships among three sisters, one of whom is dying, and their devoted woman servant. The film's celebrated color scheme is reduced almost entirely to red, white, and black. In Swedish with English subtitles. New DCP digital restoration. (MR)
