"OLD CZECH LEGENDS tells a Mosaic epic with a scale and craft akin to WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES." - Michael Sragow, Film Comment
The mythic birth of the Czech people in their own promised land is related through seven animated Bohemian legends featuring chieftains and princesses, farmers, hunters, soldiers and villainous invaders, all seen to majestic choral accompaniment. Biblical parallels mark the opening tale, when a wise chieftain ascends a peak to view the new fruitful land where he will lead his exiled people. From the mountaintop to the forest floor, Trnka makes life teem with an array of stop-motion animals, birds, and insects, as the pioneers set about bending nature to their will, planting crops and raising families. A ruling princess is dethroned and the women revolt. The rule of men holds sway, and millennia pass, marked by epic battles (some of Trnka's most astonishing achievements), leaders wise and foolish, and a lust for gold that almost sinks an empire. In Czech with English subtitles. New DCP digital restoration. (BS)
