“A precisely crafted, modestly proportioned drama that draws out the wider political resonance from a tale of individual heartache…has the feel of film noir.” — Allan Hunter, Screen Daily
In the time-honored tradition of Iranian cinema, a quest is at the heart of this story, but one that becomes a moral maze without an exit for a young couple, propelling them to answers outside the law. A lone twenty-something woman arrives bleeding and faint to timidly request an examination at the emergency room of a city hospital. Her reluctant revelation that she has been raped doesn’t add up to the staff. Her brother is called, but the nervous young man who arrives is not really her brother. Trekking from one hospital to the next with an ever-changing cover story, the unmarried lovers are trapped by arcane laws by which a woman must have her husband’s or father’s permission to receive treatment. In Persian with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
