The scandal-plagued life and premature death of Austrian figurative artist Egon Schiele, famed for his raw and sinuous nudes, is portrayed with emphasis on the intersection of his sexual proclivities and his work in this lush screen biography. The film opens in 1918, as Schiele lies mortally ill from the Spanish flu, his pregnant wife already dead. The narrative of this contentious career plays out in flashback, beginning with a close and implied incestuous relationship with younger sister Gerti, his first muse. The film’s portrayal of his tumultuous liaison with Wally Neuzil, the young model he wooed away from mentor Gustav Klimt, and his trial for the alleged seduction of an underage girl, lead up to an ultimate heartless betrayal of Wally, the subject of his most renowned painting. In German with English subtitles. Courtesy of Picture Tree International. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)
