"Superbly acted, richly provocative and never less than enthralling."—Matt Fagerholm,RogerEbert.com

“Atmospheric and intense…an outstanding central performance by Penelope Cruz (one of her best to date), cementing this as a hard-hitting, harrowing and compelling picture”—Jak-Luke Sharp, Film Inquiry

Two-time Oscar-winner Farhadi (A SEPARATION, THE SALESMAN) spins a new plot involving tangled family relations, with this story set in a Spanish village to which members of an extended clan fly in from far-flung destinations for a wedding. The story centers on Laura (Cruz), who shares a romantic history with handsome, mercurial Paco (Bardem), owner of the vineyard that once belonged to her family. Tongues wag when she arrives with her children but without Alejandro (Darín), her wealthy Argentinian husband. An air of celebration fails to hide mounting tension that reaches its apex when it appears that Laura’s teen daughter has been abducted in the course of the raucous wedding reception. Questions and moral complications emerge from every quarter, along with half-truths, ugly secrets, and shady business deals that all have their roots in Laura’s past. In Spanish with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
