“Better than LA LA LAND.” — Sara Stewart, New York Post

“This feather-light French confection addresses its dignity-of-work thesis with sweetness and heart." — Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times

A down-to-earth musical inspired by the films of Jacques Demy and Stanley Donen, FOOTNOTES is set in a French provincial shoe factory rumored to be downsizing just as young Julie (Etienne of PRIVATE LESSONS) gets a crack at her first grown-up job in the luxury brand’s stock room. Co-directors Calori and Testut draw a link between social revolt and the musical genre as they inject song and dance into a tale of feisty union women pitted against Laurent (Loíc Corbery of the Comèdie Française), the duplicitous soft-shoeing dandy of a CEO. Meanwhile, Julie struggles to know where she stands with her co-workers and her new love interest Samy (Chantreau), the handsome truck driver who longs for the open road. There are high-fashion shoes galore, with one jazzy red model dubbed “The Rebel” playing a pivotal role. In French with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)
