Nan je m' gade
(Through my eyes)

Nan je m' gade (Through my eyes) is an exhibition of photographs taken by Haitian children
depicting their lives in their hometown of Ouanaminthe, Haiti. Over the past year and a half,
School of the Art Institute of Chicago undergraduate student, Jackie Furtado visited the
Ministere Sur Le Rocher orphanage in Ouanaminthe where the children reside. Furtado's
relationship with the children grew from the connection established through her mother's
missionary work with the orphanage. She sought ways to incorporate art into the children's lives,
initially through drawings created by the youth, which subsequently led to this current project.
Over eighty disposable cameras were dispersed to the children with the instruction to photograph
everyday life in their hometown; for many of the children this was their first exposure to
photography. Their perspectives present Ouanaminthe in a personal and raw form that, to the
artist's knowledge, has not been captured before in this manner until now. Below are the first
names of the children who participated in the project:

Agues
Antoine
Bathelemey
Catherine
Chinailove
Clintanoke
Dave
Dieuline
Djimy

All proceeds from the sale of the photographs will go to the Ministere Sur Le Rocher
orphanage. The photographs are available for $50 print and $100 mounted print.
