"A witty and well-crafted love letter to old-school horror tropes." - Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter
"What could be the best horror film of the year is ingeniously crafted with twists and turns you don't see coming." - Whitney Scott Bain, Starburst
Based on hit London play by co-directors Dyson and Nyman, GHOST STORIES draws cleverly on such classic creepshows as THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, DEAD OF NIGHT, and THE EVIL DEAD, but it serves up plenty of straight-to-the-gut jump-scare moments, too. Three stories-within-the-story are nested in a wraparound involving Prof. Philip Goodman (Nyman), a Jewish skeptic who has devoted his life to debunking phony psychics and spiritualists. He gets a rude shock when his longtime idol Dr. Charles Cameron (Leonard Byrne), king of the debunkers, renounces his former skepticism and sends Goodman to investigate three cases that seem beyond rational explanation. The first involves a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse) in a moldering former asylum for women, the second an adolescent joyrider (Alex Lawther of "The End of the F***ing World") who runs over a demon, and the third a Scottish business honcho (Freeman) whose wife's pregnancy is complicated by poltergeists. Goodman's rationalism is unfazed by these seemingly unrelated case histories, but then the film cuts loose with a series of spectacular twists that collapse the three tales into each other for a karmic comeuppance that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.
