"An intense portrait of the work and life and life of work of a gone-too-soon filmmaker whose concerns with humanity and justice resonate to this day." - Ray Pride, Newcity

"HAL deals with each of the director's films in a smart, engaging manner. As befits a former editor, director Scott has an ear for the great quote and the skill to make it all flow beautifully." - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

With an amazing run of seven classic films in nine years, Hal Ashby stood alongside Altman, Coppola, and Scorsese as one of the mavericks who reinvigorated American cinema in the 1970s. Hit hard by the shift to a more corporate Hollywood climate, Ashby floundered in the 1980s, succumbed to cancer in 1988, and today is relatively forgotten - a situation which this five-year labor of love seeks to correct. When he accepted the Best Editing Oscar in 1969 for IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, the hippiesque Ashby signed off with "Peace and love." But, as his daughter notes in a moving interview, peace and love were hard to come by in his own life, marked by five marriages, obsessive work habits, sustained drug use, and ferocious battles with the studios. Friends (especially mentor and onetime roommate Norman Jewison), collaborators (Jane Fonda, Haskell Wexler, Cat Stevens, etc.), recent admirers (Alexander Payne, Judd Apatow, etc.), and excerpts from Ashby's voluminous correspondence (read by Ben Foster) illuminate his passionate personality and his visionary films, including HAROLD AND MAUDE, THE LAST DETAIL, SHAMPOO, and BEING THERE.
