"Bright, bumptious and loving" – Ray Pride, Newcity
"A dizzyingly confident ensemble film, switching back and forth between farce and poignancy without once shattering the mood." – Sheila O’Malley, RogerEbert.com
"Graceful, expressive ... Such nuanced filmmaking demonstrates a lack of condescension or sanctimony that's rare in contemporary cinema's treatment of Christianity.” – Tal Rosenberg, Chicago Reader
A lavish suburban pool party celebrating the seventeenth birthday of Henry (Doman), the well-liked son of an Evangelical pastor on Chicago’s affluent North Shore, becomes the incongruous setting for a collision between faith and hypocrisy, and, less surprisingly, between the dictates of faith and raging hormones. Director Cone (THE WISE KIDS) brings characteristic humor and generosity to the film’s intersecting subplots, as Henry secretly faces the growing intuition that he’s gay, his friends struggle with problems ranging from enforced chastity to evolution, and the gathered adults attempt to hide a host of human failings under an unconvincing mask of straitlaced perfection.
