"One of the funniest films at this year's Warsaw Film Festival...Demirtas is a wonderful comic actor." - Tina Poglajen, Cineuropa
"A lively three-dimensional character study against a convincing, detailed social background...evokes Metin's volatile world with intimacy, sensitivity, and plenty of street-smart zap." - Neil Young, Hollywood Reporter
A fast-moving crime story laced with grit and humor, A HUSTLER'S DIARY (the Swedish title is a slang equivalent of "gotta split") references GOODFELLAS in its opening montages but soon settles into its own distinctive groove. Metin Turkoglu (played with scruffy verve by Demirtas, who also co-wrote the screenplay) lives a thug's life in the Turkish-immigrant ghetto of Jordbro - torching cars, breaking and entering, pawning stolen goods. But an underlying dissatisfaction surfaces in his decision to attend a drama-school audition and his compulsive writing of a secret diary on his criminal exploits. Filled with incriminating material, the diary accidentally falls into the hands of a high-toned book editor looking for the next hot thing. As Metin scrambles to get the document back, his culture-clash encounters with the literary world provide the film's comic grist, and his bumpy path toward redemption reveals its heart.
