- IF I’M NOT HOME:
- RON COOPER, A JAZZ LIFE
- 2011, Dustin Grove, USA, 60 min.
Ron Cooper, Chicago jazz vocalist, pianist, drummer and songwriter, almost succeeded in burying his own legend. A peerless scat-singer who performed in clubs including the venerable Green Mill, he struggled with alcoholism and homelessness in his final years, often alternating gigs with hours of dozing on an el car because he had nowhere else to go. In the course of making IF I’M NOT HOME, filmmaker Grove and fellow musicians befriended Cooper, encouraging and recording for posterity a career that still had brilliance left to shine. The film includes some remarkable late career performances in the course of telling Cooper’s story, as well as interviews with a range of Chicago jazz insiders. HDCAM video. (BS)
Director Dustin Grove will be present for audience discussion at both screenings.

Wow. This looks amazing.
This is going to be great. Just read Howard Reich's review. Can't wait.
I met Ron Cooper when he was hanging out in (and eventually kicked out of) the Gallery Cabaret in the late 90's. Nice man, friendly, liked to talk music, always hitting you up for a drink. I played in a little blues band and generally disregarded his compliments about the band until I heard him sing one night. After that, any compliments he offered were like getting a pat on the back from God.
Great movie! Funny, touching, insightful, moving. Great job, Dustin!
Pretty sure I have footage of this guy from the early to mid 90's when he came to Saugatuck, MI to perform in one of John Balmers Jazz festvals .....I can get diggin if anyone is interested.
