Chicago premiere!

  1. KOOLHAAS HOUSELIFE
  1. 2008, Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine, France, 58 min.

“Heartfelt, thought-provoking, and at times hilariously funny.”
—Nicolai Ouroussoff, The New York Times

“A smart, gently ironic, thoroughly delightful film...what happens to a celebrated building after the photographers are gone.”
—Ada Louise Huxtable, Wall Street Journal

What’s it like to live in a masterpiece designed by a star architect? In the case of the Rem Koolhaas-designed Maison à Bordeaux, only the cleaning lady has the lowdown. Filmmakers Bêka and Lemoine follow the wonderfully stoic Guadalupe Acedo as she navigates the hydraulic lifts, sliding panels, minimal staircases, and spare spaces of the acclaimed house designed for a client in a wheelchair. With Tati-like drollery, the futuristic concrete-and-glass edifice puts its mechanized functions through their paces (or not), for a gentle comedy of errors that suggests that form doesn’t always follow function.
