"Antonioni’s film rewrote the language of cinema, questioning its addiction to storytelling and opening up the possibility for other, more enigmatic and poetic forms of expression." – Scott Tobias, The Dissolve
L'AVVENTURA hit the 1960 Cannes Film Festival like a bombshell--notoriously jeered at its press screening, then vigorously championed by a petition of prominent supporters. Now it is widely recognized as one of the key works in the evolution of modernist cinema. Like Antonioni’s later BLOWUP, it starts out as a mystery story but turns into something else entirely (Antonioni called it “a detective story in reverse”). A yachting party on a rocky Sicilian island leads to the inexplicable disappearance of one character (Massari) and a tenuous liaison between two others--her lover (Ferzetti) and her best friend (Vitti). In Italian with English subtitles. 35mm. (MR)
