First Chicago run!

“A complete pleasure, a gorgeous piece of wide-screen animation that is as delightful as it is unexpected.” — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

“A hand-drawn, human-scaled marvel.” — Rob Staeger, Village Voice

In this exquisite hand-drawn animated tale suitable for the whole family, a young 19th-century adventuress flees the pomp of the Russian court and the marriage her diplomat father schemes for her, in order to track her beloved missing grandfather, a famed Arctic explorer whose ship has disappeared on a mission to the North Pole. Sasha, a sheltered but plucky aristocrat with a mind for science, takes her grandfather’s maps and notebooks and barters her jeweled earrings for a berth on an icebreaker. Tricked and robbed, she learns hard lessons before finally boarding the ship for the dangerous journey into the unknown. Inspired by influences including Jules Verne’s novels and the Shackleton expedition, director Chayé, one of the artists behind THE SECRET OF KELLS and THE PAINTING, brings the pastel-painted palaces of St. Petersburg, the storm-swept expanses of the Arctic, and his brave heroine to life with breathtaking beauty. In English, or in French with English subtitles, at indicated times. DCP digital. (BS)
