"A lithe, splendid picture, dazzling in its clarity, direct emotional resonance and condensed storytelling." - Daniel Kasman, MUBI's Notebook
"Reveals a filmmaker who knows his craft inside and out and knows how to achieve the maximum effect with the simplest means...the closeups, as usual, are painterly, probing, and mesmerizing." - Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader
Continuing in the vein of his latest studies in intimacy, French master Philippe Garrel returns with another compact account of love's triangulations and tribulations. After breaking up with her live-in boyfriend, Jeanne (Garrel's daughter Esther) shows up on her father Gilles's doorstep, distraught and looking for a place to stay. Unbeknownst to Jeanne, Gilles (Éric Caravaca) has a new live-in partner of his own: Ariane (Chevillotte), Gilles's student who happens to be the same age as Jeanne. Any friction between the two women quickly dissipates into a fast friendship, but the trio's bonds are tested when a series of petty personal disasters sends each member of the household into a neurotic tailspin. While the gorgeous black-and-white cinematography and air of woozy romanticism are familiar holdovers from his prior efforts, Garrel puts a new spin on the story by focusing primarily on the experiences of his female characters, marvelously acted by Chevillotte and Garrel, and approaching the film's proceedings with a warm, knowing sense of humor. In French with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (CW)
