“Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga are exceptional.” — J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

“Fine, quiet, carefully modulated…Negga’s brilliant at drawing out the sweet dignity in every little detail of this woman’s story.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

An Oscar front-runner from the moment it debuted at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, this drama recounting a pivotal civil rights case is the story of Richard Loving (Edgerton) and Mildred Jeter (Negga), the interracial Virginia couple who married in 1958, and, after a nine-year struggle, brought their legal battle against the state’s anti-miscegenation laws all the way to the Supreme Court. Basing much of the dialogue and legal particulars on documented fact, director Nichols (MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, MUD) relies on powerfully slow-burning performances by Negga and Edgerton to create a narrative of courage through endurance, as the history-making pair brave threats, jail time, and banishment from their state to affirm their right to marry.
