Cult anime director Yuasa (DEVILMAN: CRYBABY) brings frantic energy, bouncy music, and a non-stop sense of motion to this pop-mythic tale of Lu, a heroine with a tail, and Kai, a downcast teen newly arrived in a remote fishing village with his divorced dad. In a spin on the Miyazaki-like theme of the youthful loner who finds solace in the friendship of a non-human other, Kai discovers that his late-night music lures a sprightly and very sociable little mermaid onto dry land, where she grows legs and dances. Yuasa has a ball with the fairy-tale plot that sometimes veers to the dark side with signs of the town's economic depression in the shadow of an ominous mountain, and old wives' tales that spread fear of merfolk. Madcap sea action holds sway, topped only by wacky and joyous dance numbers. In English, or in Japanese with English subtitles, at indicated times. DCP digital. (BS)
