"A visual delight… breathes life into a classic story, with a delicate hand and a careful eye." — Helen O’Hara, Empire Magazine

"Measured and absorbing… reveals a sly intelligence at the helm." — Justin Chang, Variety

In this first adaptation of Flaubert’s classic directed by a woman, the story of Emma Bovary’s unsatisfying marriage to an unambitious country doctor is collapsed into a few months. Wasikowska (MAPS TO THE STARS, JANE EYRE) brings psychological nuance to her subtle characterization of the girlishly naïve yet haughty Emma, as passion for the unattainable takes hold of her life in the form of a bottomless lust for fine furnishings and silken gowns and increasingly desperate dalliances with other men. Director Barthes (COLD SOULS) cannily contrasts the expansive beauty of the French countryside with Emma’s dark plight in a trap of her own making. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)
