"Witty and provocative." — Glenn Kenny, The New York Times

"Thought-provoking, visually arresting...so breathlessly inventive that it's nothing less than totally entertaining." — Sheila O'Malley, RogerEbert.com

The spirit of modern art comes alive in this critically acclaimed tour de force featuring Cate Blanchett in thirteen different roles. Based on an art installation by German artist Rosefeldt, the film presents an all-star lineup of manifestos from major 20th-century art movements. Each one is rendered as a performance piece vitalized by Blanchett's inspired characterizations and Rosefeldt's canny selection of richly visualized settings whose effect ranges from evocative to ironic to spectacular. Among the highlights are Blanchett as a funeral eulogist haranguing mourners with a Dadaist diatribe, a newscaster debating conceptual art with a rain-drenched weather reporter, an imperious Russian choreographer imparting Fluxus to a chorus of shiny xenomorphs, and a schoolteacher instructing fifth-graders with snippets of Brakhage, Jarmusch, and Dogma 95. Far from didactic classroom lectures, however, Blanchett and Rosefeldt's inventive tableaux are invigorating, provocative, and often hilarious. DCP digital. (MR)
