First Chicago run!

"Compassionate, engrossing from start to finish, and utterly relevant." — Geoff Andrew, Time Out London

"Nothing I've seen has captured the grinding humiliation of looking for work in the new economy like this." – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader

"Brizé makes compelling drama out of the most ordinary of circumstances, and draws a lead performance from Vincent Lindon that is a veritable master class in understated humanism." — Scott Foundas, Variety

The French title translates as THE LAW OF THE MARKET, and in many ways that is the more apt title for this deeply humanistic tale that surveys the plight of people on the bottom rung of the job ladder through one man’s choices. Lindon won both the Cannes and the César Best Actor awards for his superbly understated performance as Thierry, a jobless man beyond middle age with a wife and disabled son. With his unemployment benefits running out, he gets a security job at a big box store where dozens of surveillance cameras prowl the aisles, looking for shoplifters and cheating cashiers. As Thierry stands at last on the power-wielding side of the work equation, director Brizé (MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON) brings the film’s only moral choice home with devastating accuracy. In French with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (BS)
