"A stunningly beautiful, highly faithful adaptation of Shakespeare's play…distinguished by exquisite design throughout." - Cerise Howard, Senses of Cinema
Trnka continued to expand his range with this richly colored and thoroughly delightful adaptation of Shakespeare's enchanted comedy of mismatched lovers, meddling fairies, and maladroit actors. The animation is more fluid than ever before, the settings (given a Mediterranean flavor) deeper and more expansive. The Bard's language is entirely absent (a narrator summarizes the action), its expressivity taken up by Trnka's mastery of gesture, balletic movement, and (using a special plastic rather than his usual wood) facial detail. Most importantly, he captures the wonder and magic of the original, featuring images of gasp-inducing intricacy and beauty, most spectacularly when a myriad of multicolored miniature fairies swarm together to form the train of their queen Titania's gown. In English. 35mm. (MR)
