2003, Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 107 min. With Liv Ullmann, Erland Josephson, Julia Dufvenius.
"Gaze now upon this achievement - which is great - for it is not only Bergman's last film, but also the last of its kind." - James Quandt, Cinema Scope.
Bergman's final film is a fitting farewell - an immensely moving and intensely personal work that moves from the late autumn of reflection and regret to the early spring of reconciliation and renewal. A self-sufficient sequel to Bergman's 1973 masterpiece SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE, it reunites Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson in their unforgettable roles as Marianne and Johan. Thirty years after their divorce, Marianne impulsively pays a surprise visit to Johan at his country home. After a touchingly awkward reunion, the drama widens to include the two succeeding generations: Johan's estranged son Henrik and Henrik's troubled daughter Karin. Devastated by the recent death of his saintly wife, music professor Henrik has developed an unhealthily possessive attachment to Karin, a talented cellist struggling to break free from her father and make a crucial decision that will determine her future.
