"There is a touch of magic in MUSEO…the feeling that you might be in the presence of someone who could become the next great Mexican filmmaker." - A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"[A] gorgeous, giddy shaggy-dog heist movie…it's not every director who could take Hitchcock, Looney Tunes, RIFIFI, The Doors and Bresson in his bouncy stride but Ruizpalacios pulls it off with joyous sureness." - Jessica Kiang, Variety

Mexico's most notorious museum heist inspired this wacky yet poignant tale of two slackers, Juan (García Bernal of YOU'RE KILLING ME SUSANA and "Mozart in the Jungle") and Ben (Ortizgris), who brilliantly pull off a Christmas Eve robbery of the nation's most prized national treasures, then fumble the follow-up in epic style. The two thieves become involved in a string of encounters with an untrustworthy pal, a feisty British collector (Simon Russell Beale), and a nightclub stripper, as the priceless Aztec and Mayan objects begin to cast their own fateful spell over a pair deep in the throes of father issues and suburban angst. Director Ruizpalacios deftly balances comedy and suspense with the goofy air of a laid-back road movie, as these amateurs set out to unload the goods with all the forethought of two losers on spring break, and discover that their booty is too famous to fence. In Spanish with English subtitles. All screenings in 35mm. (BS)
