Two countries, two generations, two secrets - director Kopetanovic's first feature movingly explores a divided world and the possibilities of bridging its boundaries. Zlatko (Dragisic), a Bosnian refugee who came to Sweden over twenty years ago, has left his painful past behind him - until his Swedish-born daughter insists on being taken to Sarajevo to visit the aunt she has never seen. But there is a secret surrounding this aunt, whom Zlatko sends money to every month, just as there is another secret surrounding Zlatko's former home, which he avoids showing to his daughter. This tale of loss and remembrance contains an undercurrent of dark humor, as well as a heartfelt tribute to the city of Saravejo, rising from its battle-scarred ruins. Despite its modest running time and unheralded director, AUNT nabbed six nominations for Sweden's prestigious Guldbagge Awards, winning for Best Direction and Best Supporting Actress. In Swedish, Bosnian, and English with English subtitles. Courtesy of the Swedish Film Institute and China Åhlander. DCP digital widescreen. (MR)
