“A low-key charmer, an unlooked-for combination of Jane Austen and Isaac Bashevis Singer with a twist of Buenos Aires thrown into the mix.” — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

“A small joy…a lighthearted, shaggy-yet-brief charmer.” — Andrew Lapin, NPR

The picturesque Jewish quarter of Buenos Aires primed for a holiday is the setting for this wryly humorous father-son power struggle that brings a reluctant New Yorker back to his roots. Pudgy, middle-aged Ari’s dancer girlfriend bails on the eve of the trip meant to introduce her to his Argentinian father Usher, high-handed head of a neighborhood Jewish aid organization. Ordered by dad to pitch in on the charity’s errands, Ari seeks to dodge reconnection with the Orthodox traditions he shunned long ago, but finds attraction to his devout helper Eve, stubbornly maintaining a penitential vow of silence, a factor drawing him to the old life in the course of a week of picaresque adventures. In Spanish, Hebrew, and Yiddish with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
