“Captures the real Algren with the simplest of means.” — Jan Herman, Arts Journal
“A fabulous introduction for a new generation to this hippest of Chicago writers.” — San Francisco Chronicle
Commemorating what would have been the 100th birthday of Chicago novelist Nelson Algren ("The Man with the Golden Arm," "A Walk on the Wild Side"), a distinguished group of actors and fellow writers gathered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre for an onstage reading from the author’s powerful and brutally evocative work. Director Bucher’s camera captures Algren’s fighters, pimps, hookers, drunks, and hoods, brought to blazing life in characterizations by readers including actors Willem Dafoe, Russell Banks, Martha Lavey, Rick Kogan, and Kathy Scambiaterra, and authors Barry Gifford and Don DeLillo. Highlights include Dafoe’s stunning interpretation of a previously unpublished short story. Additional cast members include Randall Newsome and Dan Simon. DCP digital. (BS)
Sunday, November 5: Author/actor Barry Gifford and publisher/producer Dan Simon are scheduled to appear for audience discussion moderated by critic Rob Christopher.
