“The miracle of HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR was that it dismantled the conventional order of cinema, but did so while telling a moving and understandable story.” — Elliott Stein, Village Voice

“By far the most impressive digital restoration I've ever seen.” — Scout Tafoya, RogerEbert.com

Resnais’s groundbreaking first feature revolutionized film storytelling by introducing a still influential method of organizing time to express the subjective flow of the characters’ emotions, dreams, and memories. As in his celebrated Holocaust documentary NIGHT AND FOG, Resnais gives artistic shape to an “impossible” subject — in this case, the devastation of Hiroshima by the atomic bomb. Based on a screenplay by Marguerite Duras, the film moves fluidly between Europe and Asia, past and present, and documentary and fiction to recount the Hiroshima-set love affair between a Japanese architect and a French movie actress (Riva in a legendary performance) haunted by her memories of a wartime romance with a German soldier. In French with English subtitles. 4K DCP digital restoration from Rialto Pictures. (MR)
