“Momentous theater…paints an unforgettable picture.”—Michael Billington, Guardian
“Dazzling…a mix of naturalism and playfulness and fine ensemble playing from a 40-strong cast.”—Kate Kellaway, Observer
Timely and moving, SMALL ISLAND embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948. Based on Andrea Levy’s prize-winning novel, this epic new theater adaptation follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense (Harvey) yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica. Gilbert (Eustace) dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie (Aisling Loftus) longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK. Note: Strong and racially offensive language is used at times, reflecting the play’s historical accuracy. DCP digital. (Description courtesy of NT Live)
