“Crowd-pleasingly big-hearted…A raucous, ribald romp.” — Neil Young, Hollywood Reporter

The title might lead one to expect a horror film or a fairy tale, but the monstrous elements in this tangy, exhilarating road movie are the outsized egos and appetites of a troupe of itinerant actors. Reflecting director Fehner’s own experiences growing up in a theatrical troupe run by her parents, OGRES portrays the adventures of a performing group (its leader played by Fehner’s own father) whose traveling show combines elements of cabaret, circus, and roving gypsy band. Following in the footsteps of such theatre/life crossover dramas as CHILDREN OF PARADISE, THE GOLDEN COACH, and THE TRAVELING PLAYERS, the film depicts the performance world as a heightened but insular demimonde, whose volatile chemistry threatens to explode when the leader’s ex-lover (Dueñas of VOLVER) rejoins the troupe and its loose-cannon leading man (Barbé of MOZART'S SISTER) is stressed out by the pregnancy of his partner (two-time César-winner Haenel). In French with English subtitles. DCP digital widescreen. (MR)
