"An against-the-odds charmer…a near-minor miracle…by turns tender, plaintive, heartfelt and joyful." - Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

"Like a chocolate truffle with an arsenic core…broad comic appeal while offering peeks at a profound darkness just beneath." - Andrew Barker, Variety

This cross-cultural comedy careens through working-world satire, eccentricity, delusional love, and deflating L.A. adventure to bring its spinsterish middle-aged Tokyo office worker Setsuko (Terajima) to a bewilderingly wiser place. Tricked by her niece into an expensive contract for a course of English lessons given in the unlikely location of a neon-studded love motel, Setsuko has a curly blonde wig plopped on her head and is dubbed "Lucy" by the young American instructor John (Hartnett), a good-looking goofball who dispenses indiscriminate hugs to his mystified Japanese clients. Lonely Lucy falls hard, and, when John disappears under suspicious circumstances, she links up with her estranged sister and impulsively follows her passion to exotic Southern California, only to discover that some of life's lessons are tougher than English. In Japanese and English with English subtitles. DCP digital. (BS)
