A remarkable achievement, ON THE ICE is set in this first-time director’s hometown, a close-knit Iñupiaq community far north of the Arctic Circle, where the rhythms of rap and a brisk trade in crystal meth lend an urban edge to a waning traditional lifestyle under the eerie midnight sun. Three young men, friends from birth, set out on snowmobiles for a seal hunt, but only two return. This tense thriller weaves youthful mistakes, lies, and loyalties into a murder plot that feeds on secrecy and desperation as the truth closes in.
