"Improbable and endearing…the most deadpan sensibility since Buster Keaton." - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"Kaurismäki delivers his timeliest and most heartfelt film, mixing humor, pathos, and anger in a manner reminiscent of Chaplin's THE GREAT DICTATOR." - Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader

Aki Kaurismaki (LE HAVRE, THE MATCH FACTORY GIRL) is back and in top form with this tragicomic tale tracing the rocky progress of Khaled (Haji), a Syrian refugee, who stows away to Finland in search of his missing sister. Coming off a six-year hiatus, the director artfully leavens the villainy of heartless bureaucracy with his trademark deadpan humor and the merest sly glimpses of hope. Khaled lives on the knife-edge of deportation, confined to a rundown immigration center, while, in another part of town, Wikström (Kuosmanen), a taciturn shirt salesman, leaves his business and his alcoholic wife to buy a failing café in the port. Their stories merge poignantly when Khaled finds resourceful friends in unlikely places and gets hired at the shabby eatery. In Finnish, English, and Arabic with English subtitles. 35mm. (BS)
